Estado lidera lista de desmatamento e sofre aumento significativo na perda de vegetação nativa
O estado do Maranhão foi destaque negativo no Relatório Anual do Desmatamento no Brasil 2023, divulgado pelo MapBiomas na última quarta-feira (28). Segundo o relatório, o Maranhão liderou o ranking de desmatamento no país, com um aumento significativo na perda de vegetação nativa.

Em 2022, o número de hectares desmatados no Maranhão foi substancial, e, em 2023, o estado apresentou um crescimento ainda maior nessa área crítica. No ano passado, quase 900 mil hectares de vegetação nativa foram desmatados na região conhecida como MATOPIBA, que engloba os estados do Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí e Bahia. Essa área representou 47% de toda a perda de vegetação nativa no Brasil em 2023, um aumento de 59% em comparação a 2022.
Esse aumento expressivo no desmatamento se deve principalmente à expansão do agronegócio e da pecuária, apontados como os principais agentes responsáveis pela destruição da vegetação nativa. O Maranhão, com suas vastas áreas de Cerrado e Amazônia, tornou-se uma fronteira agrícola crucial, atraindo investimentos, mas também sofrendo com a exploração predatória.
A ministra dos Povos Indígenas, Sonia Guajajara, comentou sobre a situação alarmante: “O Maranhão é um exemplo claro de como a expansão desenfreada do agronegócio pode levar à devastação ambiental. Precisamos de políticas mais rígidas e fiscalização contínua para proteger nossas áreas nativas e assegurar um futuro sustentável.”
A atuação do governo federal tem sido fundamental para conter o avanço do desmatamento em outras áreas, como nas Terras Indígenas (TIs), que viram uma redução de mais de 27% no desmatamento em 2023. No entanto, o relatório aponta que atividades ilegais, como o garimpo, continuam a ameaçar regiões preservadas, inclusive no Maranhão.
Entre 1991 e 2001, o Brasil perdeu 65 milhões de hectares de vegetação nativa, com áreas privadas registrando a maior parte dessa perda. Comparativamente, as Terras Indígenas perderam apenas 0,6 milhão de hectares nesse período, evidenciando a necessidade de proteger esses territórios.
A importância da demarcação de territórios de populações tradicionais, como as Terras Indígenas e quilombolas, é ressaltada como um fator crucial para a conservação ambiental. Entre 1985 e 2022, os territórios quilombolas perderam 240 mil hectares de vegetação nativa, ou 4,7%, de um total de 3,4 milhões de hectares, demonstrando a pressão sobre essas áreas.
“O Maranhão e outras regiões críticas precisam de atenção urgente para evitar que a devastação ambiental se torne irreversível. Dados como os do MapBiomas são essenciais para orientar políticas públicas eficazes e garantir a proteção da nossa biodiversidade,” concluiu a ministra Guajajara.
